WOMEN’S HEALTH SCREENING DAY

The Hartford Gay & Lesbian Health Collective (HGLHC) is pleased to announce that it will hold its next Women’s Health Screening Day on Saturday, March 7, 2009.  Services are provided on a walk-in basis from 9:00 am - 2:00 pm.  Insurance coverage is not necessary for any of our services, which include Pap testing, breast and cervical exams, STD diagnosis and treatment, vaccination against Hepatitis A & B, screening for Hepatitis C and HIV counseling & testing. There is a $20 fee for HIV testing and $20 fee for STD screening. However, if anyone cannot afford the services, we would waive these fees and will not turn anyone away.

Kathey Fowler, Women’s Services Coordinator, states that a day like this enables lesbian, bisexual and trans women to obtain the vital health screening and exams they may otherwise not receive.  It is also a great opportunity to support our community.  Kathey also noted that lesbian, bisexual, and trans women have a greater concentration of risk factors for breast cancer and that breast cancer is most curable when detected early.  “We want women in our community to have all of the information available to them about their risks for breast cancer and early detection education.”

We urge all lesbian, bisexual, and trans women to take the time for these important health measures.  If you have any questions or would like to make a mammogram appointment, call the Health Collective at 860.278.4163.

Click here for our flyer for this event.

NOTE: Mammograms have been cancelled for this event, but all other services are still available on Saturday, March 7th. If you have questions, please call the Health Collective at 860.278.4163.

Meeting Dates in March for MPower CT (formerly the MPowerment Project)

[The Mpowerment Project has been renamed "MPower CT" by its core group members.]

Mpower CT is a program for young gay, bi, and other men who have sex with men (MSM), between the ages of 18-29.

Mpower CT provides a safe, friendly space for guys to build a strong community and promote safer-sex and HIV prevention messages through positive peer influence by all members of the project. The group is starting to plan fun, sex-positive events that are exciting and appeal to the young gay/bi men's community, with a goal of promoting safer sex. Wanna help out or meet some guys? Our next meetings are held at the Health Collective on March 10th and March 24th, from 7-9pm. Call Bill for more information: 860.278.4163 x 11, or email him at williamp@hglhc.org.

New Programs at the Health Collective: Positively Aware, and Integrity

Positively Aware: Are you gay/bi man who is HIV+? What are your plans to live healthfully as a person diagnosed with HIV?  Are you taking positive steps to take care of your health? Is managing your sex life important to you? Would you like the opportunity to learn from other people living with HIV about the pitfalls of disclosure?

Positively Aware brings together men who are both long term survivors living with HIV and those recently diagnosed to share tips and insights. Take this opportunity to restore self-confidence,  improve your  health, negotiate safer sex with partners, feel good about yourself!

Feel better, take care of your health, be clear about safer sex, be at peace with yourself! What’s not to like?

This group meets for five workshop sessions. We meet at HGLHC, 1841 Broad Street in Hartford. If you would like to participate or would like more information, please contact Liz Yorke or Bill Petrosky at 860.278.4163. Email williamp@hglhc.org or lizy@hglhc.org

Integrity:  Set yourself free from sexual risk-taking! Here at HGLHC we have an opportunity to provide ongoing, one-on-one counseling for men who have sex with men.

Would it help you to:

  • Understand your own sexual risk-taking behaviors?

  • Release some of the energy behind those compulsions?

  • Feel less caught up in a culture of internet or bookstore hook-ups?

  • Be more honest about being positive?

  • Feel good about protecting partners?

  • Become less co-dependent?

  • Feel good to have support in achieving sexual sobriety?

Whatever is keeping you at risk, or putting others at risk—we want to STOP the HIV virus, and you can help achieve this goal.
