STD QUESTIONS? OUR NURSE CAN HELP! ASK DONNA.

Q. My boyfriend recently got treated for Chlamydia.  We’ve had unprotected sex, but
I’ve not had any symptoms.  Should I get tested and treated too?

A. Good question.  If you had sex with him BEFORE he was treated, or within a week of his completed treatment, you should also be tested and preventatively treated yourself, even if you feel fine.

Chlamydia symptoms for men are usually burning when urinating (peeing), and/or a watery, white or yellow “drip” from the penis.  Women may have a vaginal discharge, burning on urination, or even lower belly pain/cramps, nausea or fever.

Early treatment is typically a single dose of oral antibiotic for a full “cure” of Chlamydia.  Because Chlamydia is easily cured with antibiotics, it is not necessary to tell “future sex partners” that you once HAD Chlamydia, because you cannot pass it on to them if you were properly treated.  But it’s very important to notify partners possibly exposed to you before your treatment, that they should be checked and easily treated too.  Telling them is not always easy to do.  Call us at the Health Collective if you need confidential help with that, or wish to be tested and treated yourself.  That’s why we’re here.

Also, about unprotected sex…  Remember that sexual choices are always in YOUR control.  Keep yourself safe.  Trying to find ways to negotiate “safer sex” with partners can be difficult.  Lots of factors come into play, and we all take various risks in our daily lives.  But, sexual health is too important to treat lightly.  The consequences can last a lifetime.  It’s NOT only about condoms.  Talk to your partner(s) BEFORE passion takes all the oxygen away from your brain.  Learn other ways to have hot sex without being at risk.  Call us for ideas.  Have fun and as our motto says:

Be Well.  Be Yourself.
