STD QUESTIONS? OUR NURSE CAN HELP!
ASK DONNA.
Q.
I have never been “screened” for an STD, and don’t have any
symptoms. But I have had several sex partners in the last year, and
my best friend said I should just get a “routine” check up. What do
you test for at the Hartford Gay & Lesbian Health Collective, and
how much does it cost? I don’t have health insurance right now.
A.
Thanx for your
question. Perfect timing, since April is National STD Awareness
Month. If you are not in a monogamous relationship, and have
multiple sex partners, it is a great idea to get routine STD
testing, even without symptoms. This is just like having regular
dental visits, or physicals with your own doctor, and should be part
of your usual health maintenance. The frequency of testing depends
on your risk factors, and is always confidential.
Like many STD
Clinics, the Health Collective screens for several STDs (also called
STIs - for Sexually Transmitted Infections), as part of a “routine”
exam. This would include taking a brief medical and sexual health
history, listing any known STD exposures, symptoms, or concerns. A
medical exam may include inspecting for Herpes (HSV2), Genital Warts
(HPV), unusual rashes, lesions, discharge, swollen glands or sore
throat.
Routine lab
tests would include a urine test for Gonorrhea or Chlamydia, a blood
test for Syphilis, and if indicated by sexual exposure, a throat
culture and/or painless anal (rectal) culture for Gonorrhea. These
bacterial infections are easily screened for and cured with
antibiotic treatment. Fee for STD exam and testing is only $20. We
do not bill insurance for STD clinic visits.
When indicated,
other tests can be done based on symptoms, exposure history, or
partner risk factors for things like Genital Herpes. This is not
part of routine screening (quite expensive), but can be ordered as
indicated. Herpes is usually most easily diagnosed by clinical exam
at the time of a symptomatic “outbreak”.
Call us to
schedule an STD screening appointment, OR drop in any Thursday
evening between 6-8 PM. (HIV counseling & testing is ALWAYS by
appointment).
Take care of
your sexual health, and protect your partners too. Be safe and have
fun. That’s why our motto is…
Be Well. Be
Yourself.

The connecticut mission of mercy is april 17 & 18
Connecticut
Mission of Mercy 2009 Returns on April 17th-18th, beginning at
5:00am at New Haven Public Field House on 480 Sherman Pkwy in New
Haven CT. It is totally free, first come first served. Thousands
of Connecticut residents have difficulty accessing dental care, for
the same reasons faced by others in less affluent states.
For this reason,
the Connecticut Foundation for Dental Outreach (CFDO) had its own
first Mission of Mercy project that took place on April 12-13, 2008
in Tolland, CT. There is no answer for the provision of dental care
for adults on the horizon. For this reason alone, a MOM project will
provide care to those who have no hope of receiving care through our
present health care system. The numbers of adults and children are
staggering and it is the hope of the CFDO to help those in need of
oral health care.
Services
Provided: Cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants, digital x-rays,
fillings, extractions, root canals, and interim partial dentures.
HGLHC's own Patricia Miller, R.D.H., B.S., has been participating in
this program since its first year. Information is available here:
