Politics and Non Profit Organizations
There is big news these
days in politics. Connecticut primary elections take place on
Tuesday, August 10th. We all have been bombarded with candidate
ads via print and electronic media, radio, TV, and road side
signs. We have also heard of the recent court decision in
California that supports same sex marriages. Marriage for same
sex couples continues to be a major political issue for our
community.
While for some this is all
politics, we in the non-profit world need to differentiate. Non
profit organizations, such as The Health Collective with the
Internal Revenue Services designation 501 (c) (3), are not
allowed to promote candidates for political office. This means
we do not, as part of our work time, participate in campaign
work. Nor do we put up posters in our offices or wear buttons
or t-shirts supporting individuals running for political
office.
We can and do, however
advocate for our clients and our community for legislation that
will benefit our community. The right to marry efforts we have
conducted which includes such activities as providing testimony
at public hearings, is part of that advocacy.
We can and do promote the
right that our clients and community have to vote. So on August
10th, and in November, exercise your right to choose who you
want to represent your interests in the political arena.
